Joe’s explanation: When Bill Clinton and George W. Bush faced serious primary challenges, they were forced to learn how to connect with voters and sharpen their message. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, just had his SuperPACs destroy his opponents with 30 second attack ads. Therefore, Mitt Romney never learned those lessons/skills.
Newt’s explanation: The consultant class puts too much stock in focus-grouped campaign ads, and not enough emphasis on getting the candidate to connect with voters.
