CNN’s Rick Sanchez alleged Hit-and-Run DUI, leaves victim Jeffrey Smuzinick paralyzed

Hey remember that time Rick Sanchez allegedly drove drunk, hit a pedestrian, and then left the scene for two hours?
Minutes after midnight on the morning of December 10, 1990, an intoxicated Smuzinick darted out in front of a Volvo on a residential street near Joe Robbie Stadium. The driver of the car, WSVN-TV Channel 7 anchorman Rick Sanchez, became the subject of a subsequent January 16 New Times story that described the odd circumstances of the accident. Sanchez, whom a Metro-Dade police officer said “smelled strongly of alcohol,” first stopped his car but then later left the scene. A blood test to determine Sanchez’s sobriety was not administered until an hour and fifteen minutes after the collision. Though Sanchez says he tried to aid Smuzinick at the scene of the accident and flag down motorists, eyewitnesses claim the anchorman ignored the injured man and loudly told police and bystanders that blood tests were pointless, and would hurt his public image.
Why did Sanchez leave the scene? To try to get the alcohol out of his system calm his nerves:
His attorney, Richard Essen, now says the anchorman returned home and had “a couple of drinks to calm his nerves” before returning to the scene. Essen doubts that Sanchez’s DUI charge will ever come to trial. “I think the results of the blood tests will be thrown out,” the lawyer says. “If the results of the blood tests are suppressed, then there is no evidence against him at all. The state cannot proceed.”
Sanchez offered ZERO financial aid, and did not even bother visiting the man he left paralyzed…
Though Smuzinick’s health insurance policy covers most of his medical costs, it doesn’t pay for rehabilitative care. Family members say unpaid bills for physical therapy now total about $81,000. To save money, they have removed Smuzinick from the clinic’s head-injury program. Using videotapes to learn therapy techniques, friends, relatives, and former co-workers have begun to provide a semblance of the rehabilitation program they can’t afford.
One friend of the family, Kelli Crist, has distributed flyers describing the accident involving Smuzinick and Sanchez. The flyers list Crist’s phone number (680-2741) and request donations to help pay for treatment and therapy. So far the fund-raising effort has not gone well.
“Nobody seems to be interested,” Crist says.
Smuzinick’s fiancee, Jackie Stringhill, says it’s just as well that Sanchez hasn’t paid a visit to Smuzinick since the accident. “I guess his attitude bothers a lot of people. But we have enough to think about. We have our hands full. We don’t really talk about the accident much any more. Anyway,” she adds resignedly, “as far as Sanchez goes, what goes around comes around.
Jeffrey Smuzinick died on November 2, 1995, largely due to the injuries he suffered in the accident.

Why is he still on the air? It makes me ill when he goes through the motions as vicitim’s advocate. What a phony. The format of his show makes it seem as though he prizes the limelight as a “Big Time Operator”. His disregard for his victims and regard for himself might well put him in the category of a sociopath. They can be very charming and persuasive. Do the research, then make CNN a news outlet, rather than a personality outlet.

Rick Sanchez is a liar. Jeffrey was the brother in law of a very good employee of mine. And to know this happened after watching Rick admonish us on local television not to drink and drive. You see, they were there covering my friend’s little girl’s hit and run…Nicole Rae Walker, who died as a result of her injuries. Rick cautioned us locals on the EVILS of driving while under the influence. And yet he went out and did the same thing. Rick, do you really think we believe your story? Good thing we worked to get the law changed. Dr. Zeiglers son will never come back…Jeffrey will never be the same…Nicole is dead, and Roy’s cousin is permanently brain damaged. All on that rash of hit and runs that began that summer with Nicole, and ended with Rick hitting Jeffrey. I personally knew three of them, beginning with Nicole.
How Dare You Rick Sanchez get associated with my daughter case, Hit and Run June 23 1992 Nicoel Rae Walker , At least Kenneth Pierce is serving 30 years in her case. You should too, Now have a drink on that Rick.
CNN should be boycotted for employing someone who not only drove drunk,but fled the scene of an accident after hitting someone. MADD should be outraged!!!! He donated nothing to the guy and never even went to see him. What a crappy person:-/
You guys crack me up. Rather than try to work together with your fellow Americans to help build this nation stronger, you waste precious time tearing down the President and others. Although I believe you to be on the wrong side of history, I still have faith that some on the right will eventually see the light, and begin to look past our petty differences. Our real fight isn’t with one another, it is with extremists, and other evil entities across the world that would love nothing better than to see America and her citizens perish from the earth. We are brothers and sisters of the same flag, and we have so much to do and look forward to.

Rick gives very good head. He la-la-la-loooves it when I ram my fist up his *ss. I remember the first time we met. We were at Fire Island and he and Ted Kennedy were tag teaming a 15 year old boy. Rick was in the back of course. They don’t call him Rick “Dirty” Sanchez for nothing.
It was love at first site. Rick all dressed up in a school girl outfit, he looked so precious. I just had to have him. But it was short lived. He was always driving drunk and I told him your gonna kill somebody someday and well you all know the rest of the story. I saw him and Anderson Cooper kissing behind a dumpster not too long ago. Rick always was a classy guy.
Good old Ricky Riccardo is the biggest loser hypocrite on cable TV. He pretends to be smart, but couldn’t think his way out of a wet taco shell. He is a drunken murderer and should be in jail.
Rick Sanchez is the worst of hypocrites. He goes on & on while on CNN but when Rick Sanchez hit & ultimately killed Jeffrey Smuzinick he is entirely silent. Rick Sanchez should not only be fired from CNN, he should be tried for murder. Rick Sanchez’s drinking & driving killed Jeffrey Smuzinick & I will never forgive Rick Sanchez for his murder. CNN as a global provider for news should stand up & do the right thing by firing Rick Sanchez for Sanchez’s murderous activities on December 10, 1990 in Miami near the Dolphins home, Joe Robbie Stadium. Rick Sanchez’s actions & complete disregard for both the law & the death that Sanchez caused are clearly reflective of Rick Sanchez’s disregard for life, decency & morality. Rick Sanchez deserves to be in jail for the murder that Sanchez caused & CNN is responsible to at the very least terminate the murder, Rick Sanchez’s contract.
The fact that Smuzinick was drunk is immaterial. All his drinking did, was put him in the way of car. This could have been considered just a tragic “accident”, however, if Sanchez was drinking, that makes him culpable and could have gotten him a charge of manslaughter. What is not in question is the FACT that he left the scene of the accident. HE LEFT SOMEONE TO DIE!!! No excuse can be made for this. I never heard this story before today. I cannot believe that CNN ever hired Sanchez. I thought he was a left wing moron before, now I see him as a despicable murderer.
That happened 20 years ago! Not saying what happened was right, but we have all done stupid things that we regret, some worse than others, especially when we are young!! And what the heck is up with the website wishing Obama fails!! I just came across this website and am appalled!! Why on earth would you wish Obama would fail? He is the president of the most powerful country. If he fails we all fail and suffer. Whether you like the guy or not, respect the office of the president and pray for his wisdom in his decisions!!!!
