I’m a strong believer in capitalism and it’s ability to drive innovation and to drive down prices. However, the incentive structure of our existing healthcare system is severely broken, and costs are spiraling out of control. I’ve had first hand experience with the health systems of the U.S, canada, and new zealand, and I’d take the systems of New Zealand or Canada over what we have in the U.S. any day. However, I do believe that the healthcare legislation that will be passed will be a uniquely american system that does address some of the conservatives criticisms of foriegn systems.
10 years ago over 95% of the money insurance companies collected went to cover the medical costs of their customers. Today it is only 80%. The amount of money that’s being allocated for actual treatment shrinks every year, primarily due to the insurance companies attempt to grow revenue each year. The best way to do this is to horde their customer’s money, and to deny claims whenever possible. One of the biggest arguments by the conservatives against a public option is that it would ration healthcare. Nevermind that this is a talking point that was originally written by the health insurance lobbyists, but the existing system severely rations healthcare already, as people are constantly denied coverage.
Great job Glenn, it is about time you let these idiots have it! They never take the time to think things through.
